South Bend 323-2, 9 fly rod
Question
QUESTION: I have a south bend model 323-2 fly rod. It is marked as such on the 1st section. It is also marked "HDH or D". 4 sections - base, mid, 2 tips. All in perfect condition, still in canvas "wrapper" and black cardboard box. No splits, nicks or rust anywhere. there is still a silver sticker on the thumb rest area of the cork grip. Inherited from grandpa. Wondering how common/rare and what the value is??
ANSWER: Paul,
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the South Bend 8 1/2 model #323 fly rod; with an extra tip, 3 sections the value of $35, 90 and $165 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. Your 9 foot rod is going to go for less like $15.
If it is in perfect condition the thumb rest has a foil and should look new and all letters readable.
I have sold similar rods for $200.
HDH or D is line weight
South Bend is a medium quality rod , and just about as rare. I see lots of them, but less of Edwards and more of H-I and Montague.
Luck,
Mac

QUESTION: Thanks for the reply, Mac. My only other question is as follows: If I am just getting into fly fishing, is this a fine rod to start with, or am I better off getting a $100 beginners rod/reel package with a graphite rod? From a performance perspective, is a new, "beginner's rod" made of modern materials going to perform equal to or better than the bamboo? Considering the value of the rod, I'd use it if I'm not sacrificing performance. Unlikely its going to appreciate significantly beyond what its currently worth. I understand this is a subjective question, but your opinion is appreciated.
Answer
Paul,
I always recommend a fast action rod for beginners. Your bamboo rod is slow - I mean our bamboo fly fishing ancestors learned to fish on it and I love and fish my bamboo exclusively.
But I do recommend a 40-80 graphite fly fishing kit. Make sure it has backing, reel, line and leader and maybe flies that are too big or book /dvd check Scientific Anglers at Wall-mart.
Good luck,
If you lived in Denver , I'd invite you over to the local community college where I teach casting and fly fishing.
