H I Rod and Reel combo
Question
Hi, Mac,
I have reviewed most of the Horock Ibbotsen Q&A's here but have not seen a reference to the combo that I have and would like to know it's relative worth. Based on the reading that I have done here I understand that these were mass produced at one time. (Ironically, I was raised in Rome, NY and had this combo given to me in Portland, OR about 16 years after I left upstate.)
This combo is a single piece piece , six-sided bamboo pole marked with the HI logo and the word "Peconic" in cursive on the rod close to where the reel mounts. The rod eyes are brass bound/wrapped and there is no cork on the handle...all wood. In all the years that I have been fishing, I would be hard pressed to call this a "fly pole". It is only about 5'6" tall and VERY stiff. It has an HI Commodore No. 1865 reel mounted approx 12" from the base of the handle and appears to be designed for deep water casting. I'm no expert but this seems to be an unusual combo. Any advice on date of manufacture, designed use and relative worth? Thanks.

Answer
Chris,
Even worse than just a plan HI rod - you have a bamboo not fly rod as far as I can tell, it is probably a sea rod.
I am not a reel guy you might try
Antique & Collectible Fishing Reels: Identification, Evaluation & Maintenance Homel, & Jellison. 1996, at your local library
Bit HI reels don't resale any better than the rods.
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the "Peconic" deep sea rod the value of $12, 25 and $65 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. Maybe there is a market for sea rods , but I don't think you can resale it.
Luck,
Mac
