Question
I was given a Denverod Pikes Peak model serial number 901490 bamboo rod. I would like to know as much information as I can. Year made, what weight of line, action of rod, any value or can I have fun with it.I did take it out fishing last weekend and had a blast.First time I fished with a bamboo rod.Don't think I can go back to graphite rod. Thank You for your time
Answer
Patrick,
Well you stumped this chump. Your rods company,"Denverod" nor model is in my memory or the following books:
Colorado Classic Cane: A History of the Colorado Bamboo Rod Makers Paperback, 1991
Dick Spurr, Michael Sinclair
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair
Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors & Anglers by A.J. Campbell
And this lack of information tells you something , your rod is not well known nor collectable. It may be a great fishing tool but it isn't going to resale for much.
Clark's Bamboo Rod Forum as always has some information on your rod

It is without authenticity but believable.
One on ebay asking price $150 - I think too much - it looks cheap enough to be Japanese.

"Rod Crafting A Full-Color Pictorial & Written History from 1843-1960, my friend the Gnome ,aka Jeff Hatton of Gnomish Rod Works Paonia, CO, wrote this photo history of rods in the 18-20th century. It has your maker and model as does "Colorado Classic Cane, A History of the Colorado Bamboo Rod Makers" by Dick Spurr and Michael Sinclair mention Johnson, the maker of your rod.
Jeff's cements bring my appraisal up a little - if your rod has nickel silver ferrules (connectors) .He also says the rod blank or some of the components came from Wright & McGill , local renown bamboo rod maker. Johnson was associated with Paul DeBell also here in my home town of Denver.
Your rod was made from 1948 to the early 50s - despite the fact you would have to explain a lot about its origins , it sounds like a great fishing tool.
Watch that auction on ebay and maybe it is worth $150.
Luck,
Mac
