QuestionQUESTION: I have a bamboo 3 piece fly rod made by Hardy Bros, Alnwick England
with stamped# "E45180" in the metal below the lock nut of the reel
seat and the following marks: I.F.S.reg.
DIC58...BRIT.REG.No.007656...are on the lock nut.
It has an extra tip end and all pieces are in a cloth case with a
Hardys label that states, "BY APPOINTMENT...HARDYS the world's angling
specialists..Alnwick, ENGLAND.
There is hand writing on the butt end of the rod forward of the cork
grip which is partially obscured. What I can make out is:
"...lad..The h. 2 'Jubil..' ..alakona...hego..Trade for....". The
reel seat is some black material
Can you give me any further information. Do you know the value?
Thank you, in advance. Sandra
ANSWER: Sandra,
I have a Hardy database that can be seen at :
http://www.upon-bamboo-fly-fishing-rods-and-reels.com/collecting-hardy-rods-and-
The hand writing "...lad..The h. 2 'Jubil..' ..alakona...hego..Trade for...." probably reads in part "The Jubilee Rod" "Palakona" "Regs Trade Mark"
As general information, Hardy rods manufactured prior to 1966 should carry individual identification numbers (i.d.) stamped on the reel fitting, or butt cap. Rods manufactured post 1966 will usually carry a simple letter coding inscribed in ink above the cork handle (month/year). As a special note, cane rods manufactured between 1966-1981 may carry either, or both, of these identification numbers.
According to this database , E45180" was made in 1938. Palakona models were made from 1881 to 1970s. You did not specify the length of the rod but I am going to assume 9 foot. Shorter bamboo fly rods have more value.
According to Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000, add about 30% for age of book.):the 9 ft Hardy Palakona, three piece has no extra tip is valued at $60, 150 and $300 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
Luck,
Mac

QUESTION: Hello Mac; I appreciate your time & energy in helping me, truly. I measured my "Palakona" and it comes to 103" without pushing the ferrules in too hard. Also, re: 2 tip ends...the 2 tip ends in the H.Bros cloth have identical guide wraps (I have another inherited bamboo fly rod, a 2 piece South Bend (a name famous in fishing)with a Comficient Grip which has different guide wraps) so I don't think that I mixed them up. The butt and middle sections of the Hardy have cork & wood plugs. The guides should be re-wrapped, I think.
Since I am looking to sell both rods, can you tell me whether any of the above info affect it's value?
Thank you, in advance for your patience....Sandra
P.S. I inherited from dad who was unknown by me (divorced) & the guide thread wraps on S.Bend are same as ones I wrapped a blank graphite rod in the 80's. Interesting???
AnswerSandra,
My kitty is fine so no questions there.
Best price is dependent of the id of the maker and model, condition and the knowledgeable presentation of the rod if online
If you see a need to restore then it is probably not in good condition.
Restoration is about $35 per section .
I often offer to restore them at not cost , sell them and split the outcome.
