Value of Antique Rod
Question
I was given a older fly rod and can't seem to find a place on-line to get approximate value. I don't have a picture to send so I know that makes it more difficult for you. It is a Eagle Claw by Wright & McGill Co. The model is Trailmaster, 7.5 foot (4 sections). It says No. M4TMF- 7 1/2. It has a small eagle emblem with H-9 under it. It also says "This rod is equiped with MiNi-FERRULES". It is wood but I don't know what type. It looks to me to be in pretty good condition with the original zipper case.
I would appreciate any input you could provide. Thanks! Dan
Answer
Dan,
Pretty sure it isn't wood. Is it round or flat sided? Flat would be bamboo but I doubt it because I have seen a large number of Trailmaster fiberglass pack rods.
Wright and McGill went into business back in 1925. After WWII they purchased Goodwin Granger to expand their market into fly fishing (their bamboo rods were inferior to Granger). Your rod is a later fiberglass rod. (Eventually they were purchased by Eagle Claw).
The trailmaster rods were very popular and are fairly common item. They run in the $10 to $40 range, depending on condition, and completeness....original cloth bag, tube, etc.
Luck,
Mac
