Nippon Fishing Tackle Company
Question
I have a balsa fishing rod box that has a two split bamboo six sided fishing rods in it. One appears to have multiple tips and is fly/fresh water style. The other is a salt water style with a much larger tip. both are in cloth bags and have multiple flies in it and tying string.Condition of rods appears to be unused, but box has some condition issues. Box is labeled N.F.T. Nippon Fishing Tackle Company LTD Tokoyo, Japan Believe it to be in the 1960's. Is their any value to this set?
Answer
Danny,
What you have there is a Japanese rod.
Originally sold by the thousands to GIs in a light long box with lures and huge flies from 1946 to the 70s . Mostly considered trinkets by collectors but memorial to GIs , they have little resale or fishing value. I have never seen any written history on them in English except the following. http://www.maxrod.net/article/
There is a book on Goggle books, with a little history and a limited preview: Bamboo In Japan by Nancy Moore Bess
They are probably not even made from Tonkin cane like most vintage bamboo fly rods .
I have cast several and they are terrible fishing tools.
Luck,
Mac
