Surf Fishing
Question
I am very interested in Surf Fishing, however I do not know the difference between a spinning rod or a casting rod.
What would be the best set up for cast and retrieve lures in the surf? Also what would be best type of rods for setting up on the beach with sand spikes using baits. I am sure I would want spinning reels for throwing plugs, add conventional for sand spikes on the beach? But even still, I do not understand the types of rods. Please advise me.
Thank You much... John
Answer
Hi John,
That's a good question. A spinning rod is shorter than a casting rod so that you can easily maneuver lighter lures. Casting rods are very long so that you an cast large lures or bait past the rough surf that is close to the beach. If you are going for large fish that swim in shallow water off of the beach (stripers, bluefish, shark, large grouper, etc.) I would advise that you use a casting rod so that you can easily toss a large bait into the water, and land a lunker. But, if you are going for smaller game fish (fluke/flounder, snapper, small grouper, ladyfish, catfish, porgie/sheapshead, drum, sea robin, snook, Jack, etc.) I would suggest that you use a spinning pole. Most people have the misconception that if you are going to fish off of the beach in the ocean, that you need a massive heavy action 7+ foot pole, but in reality, if you are going for the smaller fish I just mentioned you won't need much more than what you would use for bass in a lake (5.5-6.5 foot Medium-Heavy action). You can use that type of rod with a jig, diving lure, or topwater lure, as well as live-bait with sandspikes. If using live-bait for smaller game place small split shot a foot above your hook, and place a minnow, shrimp, worm, or whatever bait you have to your hook. For cast and retrieve lures, jig are always a good option because they are easy to use, and look like the small crustaceans and fish that game fish feed on. Try to find a jetty, rock pile, or dock because most fish tend to cling to structure. With some patience and good luck, hopefully you'll be landing fish in no time. I tired to cover as much as I could about your question and I hope I provided you with what you are looking for.
If fishin' was easy, everyone would be doing it.
Good Luck!
