Have sent detailed info on this rod in the past to online experts, with no reply, cept that they are out of business,
Chuck
ANSWER: Chuck,
I am guessing your rod is made of bamboo ( flat sides) not round like fiberglass.
I am also guessing your rod is a fly rod with the handle below the reel seat.
Horrocks-Ibbotson Co. made a bamboo fly rod model named "Lucky Strike" from the 20s to the 40s.
It can't be in excellent condition if a wrap is missing or loose. Odds are it is in good condition but could be poor. To be in good condition the finish must be complete and smooth. Most people who have only seen 1-2 bamboo rods over evaluate the condition of their bamboo rods. check condition at the library with the book I mention below.
What experts did you ask ?
Horrocks-Ibbotson used labels and fish on their rods. I am guessing that "Lucky Strike is written in white cursive on the rod.
If I am guessing wrong then all bets are off.
Price Book:
<i>Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide<i> by Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel doesn't specifically mention the Luck Strike model =- there are too many .
Average value by Homel for 3 piece H-I bamboo fly rods is $15, 30, and $60 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
They are looked down upon by the collecting community and often they are justified. They were sort of mass produced , rather heavy and very slow. They are not going to resale for very much.
A small portion of these rods are decent fishing tools . It is the collector community that decides the prices , please don't blame the messenger.
I find two books are available at larger libraries to get history and or value:
Homel (Prices) and
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook -Michael Sinclair (model names)

QUESTION: Mac: re: white cursive on the rod, no, " LUCKY STRIKE" is black and gold capital letters on a red background. - not cursive. Yes, bamboo fly rod, 6 sided, 3 - three foot sections with one more section with alternate tip. One thing, the cork handle is above the reel attachment section, which is different from your description. Thank you and will look for the Homel book you mention.
Thanks again, Chuck (Yes, one "wrap" is abraided on the handle section.)
AnswerChuck,
You are correct, it is a fly rod.
But I have seen the logo "Lucky Strike" on Shakespeare rods, which is a little bit more valuable than the HI.
Send me a picture to
[email protected] if you are so inclined.
and I am still curious
What experts did you ask ?
and
What did you mean by "Utilan"?
