Question
My brother and I received two South bend fly rods from our great Aunt and we just wanted to know a valve for the rods. They are bamboo and I believe they were made in the 1930's or 1940's The rod's numbers are 377 inspected by employee 119. One is 8.5 feet and the other is 9 feet both are in the case they were bought in and have extra parts. Both are in great shape and the one i received was only used a couple times. It looks almost new. I will sent you pictures later if you want me too. Just let me know where to send them too.
Thank you
Luke
Answer
Lukas,
Each South Bend rod was made in three actions; Wet Fly or Trout Action, Bass Action, and Dry Fly Action. The model number designates the rod's grade, or quality and the series number represents the type of action. For example, #137 is Trout Action, #37 is Bass Action, and #377 is Dry Fly Action. All of these Model 37 rods have the same wraps, hardware and other specifications, only the taper is different. Yours is then a dry fly action.
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair , says the 37 was mid quality starting in 1936 thru the 1950s.
Value from Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the South Bend 8.5 model #359, with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of $35, 90 and $165 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. The 359 and 377 are comparable.
Nine footers sell for a little less and shorter rods; 35,80, $150 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
Your dry fly rod 8 1/2' would probably sell for more than $200 if properly presented.

Mac
