Question
model 59-9
I have a Southbend Model 59 9' Bamboo flyrod my father bought new. I would like to know the value of it. I can send pictures if needed. It has always been kept in the original cloth 4 slot case inside the original cardboard tube. It has never been refinished as it has very little use. One tip was never used and you can tell very little difference in the one that has been used. The cork shows a little uae as the label has been worn some. I am guessing it was purchased in the early 50's
AnswerJim,
Use does not always dictate condition. Storage is very important and improper placement can cause bent sections, lowering values. From one picture it is very difficult to see the condition, but the cork grip is not in good condition , the metallic label is worn and discolored.
South Bend rod model numbers are a bit confusing, but there is logic to the system. Each rod was made in three actions; Wet Fly or Trout Action, Bass Action, and Dry Fly Action. The model number designates the rod's grade, or quality and the series number represents the type of action. For example, #159 is Trout Action, #59 is Bass Action, and #359 is Dry Fly Action. All of these Model 59 rods have the same wraps, hardware and other specifications -only the taper is different. This is according to
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair and I have cast enough SB to confirm it also. So your is a slower action , bass fly rod.

Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000# add about 30% for age of book.
Before I quote the price, let me say most people over evaluate their bamboo fly rods. Have you seen other bamboo rods?
Homel gives the South Bend Model #59 fly rod 8 1/2' c.1950, 3 sections and extra tip , the value of $35, 90 and $165 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. Your rod is a little less valuable as it is longer. Bottom line maybe $100.
I can always do more with more details.
Luck,
Mac
