Question
Box W/ 2 - 12' 4" pole
Greetings, I purchased this old box containing 2 old bamboo fishing poles inside, at an antique sale. I'm wondering if you can tell me anything about these poles, as there are no markings what-so-ever on poles or the box - Box appears to be very old, judging by the hadware & likely the original shipping container/holder & the 2 poles are a total of 12' 4" long each, & are 8 sections each - 1st 3 sections are 21 1/2" long each - next 3 sections are 20 7/8" each - section # 7 is 20 3/8" long & section #8 is 19 5/8" long & is the tip section & has a very small loop in the end, possibly nylon type material & is the only loop or eye on the entire pole. Diameter at both ends of 1st section is 1/2" & gets gradually smaller down the line, 3rd section is 3/8" Dia. & so on down to solid end piece, which is 1/16 to 1/32" dia. I don't have a scale to weigh poles, but will try an attach a picture, in hopes that you can help me out! Thank You Very Much, Bill P.
AnswerBill,
I've seen boxes similar to yours as made in Japan. I have seen rods a little less but close to yours on ebay - bought one myself for the wall for $5.
They are a different from Western style fishing rods.
They also do not appear in any books or websites in English.
I believe them to be Japanese
Usually I say:
Originally sold by the thousands to GIs in a light long box with lures and huge flies from 1946 to the 70s . Mostly considered trinkets by collectors but memorial to GIs , they have little resale or fishing value. I have never seen any written history on them in English except the following. http://www.maxrod.net/article/
There is a book on Goggle books, with a little history and a limited preview: Bamboo In Japan by Nancy Moore Bess
They are probably not even made from Tonkin cane like most vintage bamboo fly rods .
I have cast several and they are terrible fishing tools.
Despite that, I am interested in your rods.
What are you planning to do with them ? email
[email protected]
Tell me how tight they are when fit together, please?
Do sections store inside one another like those nesting Russian dolls?
and may I ask how much you paid for them ?
Luck,
Mac
