Old Fly Reel
Question
I bought a box of old fishing gear at an auction and it had a True Temper, Tempest 160 fly reel in it.It seems to be all metal construction. It has made in the USA stamped on it. I was wondering how old it may be and if it is a decent reel that could be used. Also if there is a way to tell what weight/size line line it may be for.
Answer
Ron,
True Temper was a division of the American Fork and Hoe, starting in 1929 and running thru 1957. They are low to medium quality, high production reels. Thus they don't generate much collector value.
The line weight is more specific to the fly rod. Your reel should be fine up to a 7 weight.
