My model 59 bamboo South Bend Fly rod
Question
I have a South Bend Model 59, 9 ft bamboo fly rod (must be bass model). The label is square so it is post WWII. Approximately 60 years old. Varnish is in pretty good shape but I am rewinding the guides. My question is this: I understand most fly rods have 9 guides and a tip top. The one I have only has 8 guides. It is very possibly has been rewoung at least once before and done wrong. If I want to make it as close to the original as I can, how many guides does it have and can I get information on the proper spacing from somewhere?
Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Neil

It's very possible that it has been restored or re wrapped if that is what "rewoung" means.
When I strip finish off, I can usually see lighter spaces where thread has protected the bamboo from UV.
If your date estimate is correct it should have a Comficient thumb grip / rest.
But I am sorry to report that South Bend is medium priced and quality rod company and no one has written down the number of guides and spacing.
I'd probably go with 9 after carefully studying it , most are nine. But the sections should be equal in length.
I don't see the the number of guides and spacing in Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair , but I recommend it.
Luck,
Mac
