Orvis Special bamboo rod
Question
You probably get questions like this all the time, but here goes . . . A neighbor knew that I fly fish, so he offered me an Orvis bamboo rod. The tube (and the rod) are marked Orvis impregnated Special. It's not a Battenkill Special, just a "Special." It's 7 1/2 feet, two pieces, no extra tip, a darker bamboo than I expected (call it caramel), rated for a #6 line. I've only fished with graphite rods, but I know of the full flex of many bamboo tapers, and this one doesn't disappoint. I believe the serial # is 37XXX, so it was probably made about 1962 or 1963. There's nothing truly special about the components (aluminum reel seat, what look like bronzed guides). But I'm intrigued because the rod it utterly straight and not a scratch anywhere on it. It's as it it was purchased in 1963 and never saw daylight again. The tube is unpainted, though it has a blue and white Orvis label on it and a green plastic cap. It also feels as if it'll handle line slighter than a #6. OK, so the question--any way to determine fair value for this rod? And is this "Special" anything special? Thanks for your time and thoughts--Chuck
Answer
Chuck,
I could probably tell you more if you got me the serial number.
You probably already know bamboo fly rod rod lengths under 8 foot command a higher resale value.
I rely on Homel to support my evaluations. Market value - check ebay as well.
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide by Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel mentions two specials, "Limestone Special" Battenkill 8 1/2' (2/2) #6 and "Limestone Special" Madison grade (2/1) .
Homel gives the Battenkill fly rod 7 1/2' (2/2), 150, 300, and 550 for poor, good, and excellent condition respectively. I think 550 is low for your rod as it is described - I might get 700 for it - I sell them on commission.
I disagree with 1962 or 3 - what is your source? I say 1964.
I have a database that has been confirmed by many evaluations and customers calling Orvis. It was on the Orvis and Banjo fishing web sites but both have shut this page down.
Special is one of Orvis bamboo fly rod models. Often Built by George Reid and Calvin Skinner--grey bag, aluminum tube with green plastic cap and blue, white and gold paper label
Also has Super Z ferrules
My experience is that you can call Orvis 888-235-9763, they have a non digital , paper source with more complete serial numbers. But if you ask for a value they will put you off but if you ask for age, maker, and model then you will get some info.
Luck,
Mac
