Heddons fly rod
Question
Hey Rich;
I have James Heddons & Sons #10 Blue Waters 8' 4oz 3 piece extra tip 1 3/4 fer split cane fly rod. It has the original cloth pouch and tube with readable labels. All this information is written on the shaft just above the reel mount. The reel mount is a two tone plastic with open threads. Any info you could inpart to me would be greatly appreciated.
Answer
Dave,
I don't understand "1 3/4 fer" maybe you mean 1 3/4 F? That is ferrule size.
The information on the bags, tags and tube are important only if they match the rod.
If I understand you correctly, on the butt section ( has a cork handle) ,in black cursive script is the following #10, 8' - 1 3/4F, should have HDH or E (or really close to it). Ferrule sizes started in started in 1939. And then is the word Heddon written on the flat (started in 1951) or diagonally across the flats? Is the model name "Blue Waters" written on a flat of the butt section?
The #10 was first made in 1934 through 1954 , dated by the above script changes on the butt section. Older is more collectable and valuable. Yours is 1939 to 1955.
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) gives the value for the 8 foot model #10 Heddon trout fly rod, 3 sections , with an extra tip valued at $65, 160 and $295 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. You could add 30% due to age of book. If presented properly you could get more.
Luck,
Mac
