A handed down bamboo rod
Question
Hello I'm Nate, i recently got handed down a Montague split bamboo fishing rod. I saw that these are looked down upon by the collectors but i am really looking for some info on it. It was my great grandfathers who passed it to my grandfather who forgot about it then found it the other day and offered it to me. I said yes!!! I collect all types of antiques so it was a no brainier. anyway, its in very good condition just the case has a few dents but everything including labels and cloth are in great condition and original. The rod itself is mint. Its 3 pieces, 2 of which are the same. On the case it says "1 R2F RAPIDAN 2 pc. FLY 7 1/2 ft." the line under it says "Montague rod and reel company. Its a fly rod with the reel seat sitting below the cork handle. the metal has no id and there is a logo on the rod but i believe it just says : U.S. pat." Like i said its split bamboo and round I'm not sure the weight or diameter or even where purchased. Its 7.5 ft total and is in 2 pieces. I'm looking for any info but i am most interested in: What year apx. it was made and how much it is worth, but any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, Sincerely,
Nate
Answer
Nathan,
The 2 piece, under 8 feet rods mad by Montague are an exception to the standard low price poorly made Montague Rods.
Books:
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide by Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair
Homel gives the Montague 7 1/2 ft model Rapidan , has an extra tip, 2 piece a value of $40, 125 and 265 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.

to date it I need a detailed picture and or description of all labels and logos.
*example of a good detailed description of a label:
The Shakespeare decal is olive green ovals with gold foil banner bearing the word 揝hakespeare?in script. The remainder of the of the lettering is block style reading on top Honor Built and on the bottom of oval , Made in USA. The writing is away from the grip.
Luck,
Mac
