Phillipson 3m Swamp Fox SFS470
Question
I just purchased a Phillipson Brand 3m Swamp Fox 4 pc SFS470 7'0" 3 oz. #6 Line Lure thou 3/4 oz. Made in U.S.A. It looks new, never used. it has the original canvas bag and tag (Scothply Epoxy Fiberglass) with aluminum tube. I can not find any information on it or value. I paid $150 for it.
Thanks for your assistance.

Answer
Scott,
I am a bamboo fly rod man. I see my share of fiberglass but they just do not command the interest of the collectors , so little to no history is recorded .
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide by Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel mentions several Phillipson fiberglass rods. I know he was a great maker from my home twon , Denver. He consulted with the Army of how to use fiberglass so he was bright and knew ow to research. He was airborne, right flank on Normandy with the Screaming Eagles.
Homel gives the average value for those Philipson fiberglass rods as 19, 52 and 96 for for poor, good, and excellent condition respectively. The highest is $140 in mint.
If your rod is a spin rod it's a strike two. If the reel is below the handle then it's a fly rod.
I have no specific history or books on fiberglass, I believe they don't exist, but here's two web sites that on fiberglass:
http://fiberglass-fly-rods.pbwiki.com/
http://www.fiberglassflyrodders.info/:
Please be cautious about someone telling you your rod is worth thousands until they offer cash. People want fiberglass to be collectable like bamboo but that doesn't make it so.
Luck,
Mac
