Winchester 6220 Fly rod.
Question
Hi Joe,
A friend of mine gave me a Winchester, Trade mark, made in USA bamboo fly rod. It's an 8'5" from cork handle to tip. A bit longer from end to end. A couple of eyelets are not attached, but I have them. Looks like a six sided rod. In excellent shape. Can you tell me anything about this rod? It sure looks cool.

Answer
Hi Tim,
I believe the model 6220 was made after 1935 by Horrocks-Ibbotson; this would be after H-I bought the Winchester rod making division. H-I was allowed to continue using the Winchester name on these rods. The rods were typical H-I production rods that were simply labeled as Winchester and carried model numbers in the 62xx range. These are considered rods of lower quality than the Winchester rods made between 1920-1935; especially lower quality than those made between 1920-1924 under the supervision of E.W. Edwards at Winchester.
My guess at value would be in the $160-$200 range depending on actual condition of the rod. This range could vary a bit either direction depending on the rod.
If it is truly in excellent condition...or at least Very Good...and has no structural issues, you should be able tto get the guides wrapped and try ffishing with it. This rod would most likely work best with a modern 7wt line (WF or DT)...and possibly with a 6wt modern line.
It is not likely that this will develop large collector interest or value...so if you fix it up, it might be fun to fish with.
Thanks, Joe
