value of fly fishing poles
Question
Mr. Douglas
I have a South Bend HEH or E 177-8 1/2 in good condition w/ another additional top section that I guess was extra. Also original carrying mesh containers that say south bend. one container in good condition other has rips.
I also have a Columbia 8 ft. fly pole. I can't find too much info on the pole other than Columbia w/ Utica ,NY Horrocks , 1BBotson Co. Masters of Fishing Tackle painted at the base of the pole. Maybe you can tell me where to look for identification. hope to hear from you .
Thank You,
Carl
Answer
Hi Carl,
The South Bend #177 is a trout rod (circa 1942) that sold for $12.50 new. The HEH or E equates to a modern 5wt (WF or DT) or 5wt Level fly line. The rod originally came with two tip section which was customary on most of the vintage bamboo rods.
From your description we'll assume your rod fits into the Good-Very Good condition category which would make it's estimated value in the $150-$200 range depending on actual condition.
To be rated at this level you rod needs to have all four section, all of which must be full length, the original bag, original tube, and have no damage, missing guides, finish problems or otherwise less than a Good/Very Good solid old rod.
The Horrocks-Ibbotson (H-I) Columbia is a general purpose fly rod from the 1930s that sold for $3.75 new. It will probably work best with a modern 7wt line in either WF or DT. The 8 foot length is a plus for this rod.
To be a complete rod this one needs all four sections, all sections full length and the original bag...plus, if it had one, the original tube. Condition is everything for value. This was a low end production rod with little collector value but it may fish OK.
Assuming Good/Very Good condition value would be $45-$70 today.
