Bamboo Fly Rod No Marking
Question
I picked up a bamboo fly rod without any marking. It's in great shape. How can I identify what it is?
Answer
Hello Jon,
Thanks for asking.
Without markings, removed through wear or refurbishing, one can only guess. Very few, if any split cane rod makers had "signature" designs or markings that were not inked on and then varnished over or labeled with water transfer decals.
By researching the types and quality of ferrules that join the sections, type and style of reel seat used and at times thread type, color and scheme, we can come up with some probability as to the maker.
Often, when high quality rods are refinished or repaired, split cane enthusiasts know the brand and quality of the rod and go to great lengths to preserve that information.
I may be able to help further but I need some high resolution jpeg images of the rod, each section, the ferrules, reel seat and most importantly the area just forward of the handle that might show ANY remnant of markings.
The list of manufacturers is long and any high quality cane rod is well worth a solid investigation. Unfortunately, MANY less than valuable split cane rods were produced over seas as well as domestically.
So if you'd like to send a follow-up with attached images, I'd be happy to research further.
Thanks again for the question-
