Question
Rod and tips Rod Markings
Hello, I am about to sell my Nat Uslan 9 ft. 5 1/2 oz. Challenger fly rod bamboo Tonkin cane. #101051 This rod belonged to my father. We do not think it has been used as we do not remember him fly fishing specifically. It appears to be in excellent condition. We spoke with Nat's nephew by phone and he added some info. He dated this rod as 1951 as you probably know the last 2 nos. of rod no. are the year. He is not a fisherman, but has sold some rods he had. We were also told this was a rare model. Rod is marked Uslan Inc. We are about to advertise rod and we discovered this website. Wondering if you have any input to the puzzle. Was thinking of asking $500-550. We appreciate your answer.
Thanks.
John
AnswerJohn,
Nat Uslan produced two distinct series of five-strip rods; the Deluxe model with a resin impregnation finish, and the Spencer model with a traditional varnish finish. Both series were produced in two-piece and three-piece versions, ranging in length from seven to nine feet.
From the weight of your rod it is easy to assume it is impregnated. I agree with 1951.
History: http://mysite.verizon.net/vze2h7gi/fishnbanjossliceoflifeincyberspacecopy/id21.h
It is 5 sided, and has nickel silver super "Z" ferrules (invented by Nat Uslan). Which is great quality!
Uslan is mentioned in Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & V model.alue Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
I am assuming you have a Deluxe model. Homel gives the 7.5 model Uslan Deluxe trout fly rod with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of $165, 395 and $650 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
A two section rod is more valuable and a longer rod is less.
Value: I would support 550 an you will get it is written up well ($5.50 at
