Vintage Bamboo flyrod South Bend
Question
Hi Mac;
I come across a bamboo flyrod made in the US by South Bend. it has 47-9' HCH or C marking. It's in mint condition. Can you tell me how much it's worth.
Best regards;
Hussam
Answer
Hussam,
The model #47 appeared in the latter 1930s and continued into the 1950s. If it has the "Comficient" cork grip, thumb rest, it is from the 1940s-1950s. If not, it is from the latter 1930s.
The HCH equates to a modern 7 wt Double Taper (DT) fly line.
The C equates to a modern 7 wt Level fly line.
Homel gives the South Bend 9' model "Model #47" fly rod with an extra tip, 3 sections the value of $35, 80 and $150 for poor, good, and excellent condition respectively.
This was most likely intended as a bass rod, but will work reasonably well as a trout rod. I have used a model #47 in the past for trout and it performed well.
Luck,
Mac
