Nat Uslan rod
Question
Hi Mac,
Thank you for your knowledgeable and prompt response to our question regarding the Nat Uslan Challenger. Somehow I was not able to leave comments on rating page. Will do so after this response. We were curious though after reading another response stating that most rods' condition is not always accurate, what is the best way other than physical appearance to test the rod for its condition. As we stated we felt the rod was in excellent condition based on appearance. Thanks again and this time I will respond to the rating properly and would like to exercise a vote as well.

Answer
John,
It is mostly observable visual information. People think a missing guide still makes their rods in mint condition. Mostly these bamboo rods look beautiful to people , or it's a relatives rod and therefore must be very valuable. They have never seen another rod and so . . .
If you run your finger down the flats , finish should be smooth no cracks or flaking. I can see these if I hold it up to the light. Unused cork should not have dirt or hand greases or have pot marks.
Some people are accurate in their evaluation of condition.
It is not a subjective thing , Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide by Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book. Homel has very specific criteria for every level of condition.
Luck,
Mac
