Sakura fishing rod
Question
I heve a Sakura bamboo fishing rod that was given to me . It came with the box and a couple of extra tips, how ever the handle section is missing. The label on the rod says "No. 100 Bluesky" can you give me any info about this?
Thanks
Answer
Tim,
The rod you have was made in Japan.
Originally sold by the thousands to GIs in a light long box with lures and huge flies from 1946 to the 70s . Mostly considered trinkets by collectors but memorial to GIs , they have little resale or fishing value. I have never seen any written history on them in English except the following. http://www.maxrod.net/article/
There is a book on Goggle books, with a little history and a limited preview: Bamboo In Japan by Nancy Moore Bess
They are probably not even made from Chinese Tonkin cane like most vintage and new bamboo fly rods.
I have cast several and they are terrible fishing tools.
The extra tips usually means this rod is both a fly and spin rod.
If your rod was not not bad enough this type of rod that tries to be 2 types usually ends up being neither.
Luck,
Mac
