Heddon #14
Question
I inherited a Heddon #14 8.5 ft, 2F Thorobred three piece rod with two tips. Has the red velvet sleeve and the metal case. Looks like it is signed H D Hore??? (Maybe H D Hor E) I've had it in storage for about 40 years and recently took it out and was thinking about starting to fly fish with it.
What can you tell me about it? Does it have any value?
Answer
Hi Dave,
Sounds like a nice rod. The basic description is interpreted as follows:
#14 - 8 1/2' - 2F - HDH or E
#14.......rod model number
8 1/2'....rod length
2F........number 2 ferrule set
HDH.......modern 6wt line either WF or DT
E.........modern 5wt Level line
The model #14 Thorobred was made from 1927 through 1952. You can narrow down the year of manufacture a bit with specifics like reel seat, handle and wrap colors. The #14 was a mid range quality Heddon rod and sold for about $15 when new. It is a good all around fly rod useful for trout or bass and of good quality. It does have reasonable collector value.
Value depends on actual condition of the rod. You have a complete rod with both tips, bag and tube. All rod sections should be full length to improve the value. There should be no missing components, serious damage, loose wraps or obvious finish damage. You should look the rod over and decide where you think it fits on the condition scale...be honest in your appraisal.
Poor-Fair condition value.........$75-$150
Good-Very Good Condition value....$150-$300
Excellent-Mint Cndition value.....$300-$450
As long as the rod is in good shape, the ferrules fit well and the wraps are all good, you should be able to fish with the rod as is. I would advise applying a light coat of car wax to the rod shaft to protect the finish and freshen it up a bit.
Thanks, Joe
