A. H. Fowler bamboo rod
Question
Hi Joe, I have an 8' 6" A. H. Fowler bamboo flyrod that was handed down from my grandfather.I've had it for probably 30 years. It has line guides that swivel back and forth. The butt end where the reel attaches is silver with A. H. Fowler egraved.Dark brownish-red in color and is in fairly good shape.Just trying to get some feedback on what it's worth.Maybe interested in selling it. Thx---Pete
Answer
Hi Pete,
Alonzo H. Fowler was one of the early pioneers in split bamboo rod making. Dr. Fowler passed away in 1903 and most of his rod making took place in the latter half of the 19th century. You have a rare and potentially very valuable fly rod.
I do not have any reference data on fowler rod values, but it is very valuable, and I do have some questions.
Is the bamboo surface rounded off or is it six sided?
Are the line guides rings that essentially "flop" back and forth?
What do the ferrules look like?
You should locate an experienced apprasier in your locale with expertise in very old bamboo fly rods. I would think that the best way to sell, if you decide to, is through one of the larger auction houses with a wide audience of potential buyers.
Thanks, Joe
