Outboard Motor for G3 Jon Boat
Question
Hi Jack,
I'm wanting to purchase a G3 jon boat in Louisiana. I had previously heard that you should never take a freshwater outboard into saltwater, due to corrosion. MY QUESTION: Is there an outboard that you can take in both types of waters or would I need to purchase both a freshwater & saltwater outboard? Thank you, sir.
Answer
Mitch, I spent 24 years living in Panama City, Florida which is on the Gulf Coast. There is good fishing in the bay and in the lake at the head of the bay. I used an Evenrude 25 built in 1954 for many years in the 1970s and 1980s and had no problem using it in both the bay which is salt water and the lake which is fresh water. BUT and this is very important. Each and every time I used it in salt water I either took it and run it in fresh water immediately or took it home and using one of those things that hook to the bottom of the motor and a hose from a fresh water hydrant and flushed it out thoroughally and then sprayed it and the whole boat off with the hose. Missing one time of rinsing it out may well harm it so if it is too much to take time to wash it then don't use it in salt water. I do not know if a motor is made for salt water that does not need this flushing. There may be by now but I am sure it will be very expensive.
I hope this will be of some help. Sorry I can't completely answer about the motor for salt water.
