Fenwick Rod
Question
Hi Joe, I have had a Fenwick Rod I bought in the 70's (I know I'm getting old !), that I never fished(really old, Huh). It is a Fenwick Streamer rod, marked SF 866-2. It is not Brown fiberglass it is Black. It has the usual fly rod grip and real seat. In addition it is marked 8'6" 6 weight 3 1/8 oz Made by Fenwick Taiwan. I can't seem to find out much about this rod. Most people say FS is a spinning rod, but the reel seat is definitely for a fly reel and it is marked 6 weight. So my question is it a Streamer fly rod ? What is it made of (fiberglass or early graphite) ? Is it any good for small bass. Is it any good at all ? Thanks for your help,
Frank
Answer
Hi Frank,
Fenwick did have a lot of rods made in Japan; and rods made in Taiwan may have been another production site for them. They do indicate "other parts" of Asia as production sites.
I wouldn't obsess over the SF...maybe it just means Fenwick Streamer. I have seen SF used for Fenwick Fly/Spin combination rods. If this rod has all fly guides and a fly reel seat, it is a fly rod. If it has a guide setup that would allow use of both a fly reel and a spinning reel, then it is a Fly/Spin combination.
I would think it would make a very nice bass rod. It is probably fiberglass, but it is light enough in overall weight to be an early glass/graphite mix.
I would use it for streamers, poppers and small stick baits on bass.
Thanks, Joe
