Montegue Fishing Rod
Question
I recently came across a Montegue Fishing Rod model #8781, National fiberglass products, made in the USA. It has something that looks similar to a pulley on the tip, it is metal on the bottom where the reel would attach. It also appears to have a dark foam-like grip placed above the t
reel placement area. There are four metal eyes for line to go through and then the pulley at the top.
Can you give me an idea of how old it might be? If it has any value or where I might sell it? I have no real use for it but maybe somebody would really like to and it to their collection.
Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to provide.
Answer
Hi Trish,
It is a pulley at the tip end and the rod would be used for saltwater fishing for larger game fish. It probably would be used with very heavy braided line or wire line...possibly very heavy monofilament line.
The rod likely dates from the 1950s-1960s...maybe even into the 1970s...it would probably be valued in the $30-$75 range depending on actual condition. Montague made rod for the average guy and they are not considered high dollar collectibles, as a rule.
You might try one of the online fiberglass rod discussion forums. Search for "bloody decks" and start with that one.
Thanks, Joe
