Shakespeare 1362 Split Bamboo Rod
Question
I read Joe Douglas' excellent description and value of my split bamboo 1362 fly rod, article dated in 2007. Mine has both tips and clothe bag. It also includes a mailing tube, post mark date of 1942, addressed to Mrs Hal Brutzman, Orofino, Idaho. Is it worth more in the post marked mailing tube?
Answer
Hello Michael,
Somehow your question slipped through the cracks in All-Experts system and don't believe I ever received a notification about your question waiting! Usually I would get a notice daily and if I did not answer you, I would be dismissed! Please forgive me.
If in fact you still own the rod, I'm guessing a Spring Brook, any story or accessory that you have for the rod can add to its value. The overall condition of the rod, the socks condition and the tips will likely keep the rod in the collectors eye. Does the tube have a Shakespeare label on it? That to would make it a bit more collectible. IF the tube is in fact the mailing tube only, it still adds nicely to the mystique of the rod as a neat collector...that may well add up to an increased value.
I have not consulted Douglas' value of your model but, as you may have seen on some collector forums, the price is reasonable.
I typically don't offer valuations due to the matter being so subjective but if the cork, seat, finish, guides (Agate or garnet stripper?), wraps and the labeling are close to new, it will be worth far more than average for a 68+ year old slit cane rod!
If you have found it not to be so, you can either keep it in the condition it is and hope for an increase in value some day, or you can refurbish it and take her fishing? Personally, I would very likely fish it!
Just remember, any story or supporting items that go with a collectible fishing item will ALWAYS add to the value if a collector is in the market to purchase it from you.
Sure hope this helps.
Once again, forgive the very unusual situation your question ended up in.
Best regards and luck in your angling adventures,
Mark
