Question
Rod Brand Lable Flat Metal Rod Grip
I would like to have my antique rod refurbished for my son. It was my first rod given to me from Grandpa 40+ years ago and it's in decent shape, but I'd like to clean it up so maybe he can hand it down to his son.
Would you recommend I send it out to a specialist, or is it fairly common to repair rod's and can "anyone" do it?
Thanks in advance.
AnswerRuss,
I made this question public, because it is a great question.
I don't think anyone can do it but if you are handy or crafty you can do a reasonable job. Mostly it is a cleaning and buffing job.
I use denatured alcohol to clean the cork handle.
Your rod is not a fly rod so you really can't lower it's resale value.
If the rod was bamboo I would recommend someone with experience.
Usually the most difficult part of restoration is wrapping guides on with thread.
If you think you can do it, go for it.
Often fly shops have rod building classes. You could get some help there.
And finally I do allot of restores- email me for an estimate but send pictures of the guides.
