Question
handle
I seem to have an unusual Granger bamboo rod that does not have a model name. Every posted response on any web site I have found has said there is always a model name. However on this site I saw a similar post from Dennis 1/1/2009 in All Experts that said his did not have a model name. Also like Dennis's post the wrappings are green. Y were the expert that responded. I have attached a picture. I have more.
It is a three piece rod. There is an extra tip. All four pieces are equal length, about 36 1/2 inches. The handle says on line 1 PAT PEND, on line 2 MADE BY, line 3 GOODWIN GRANGER COMPANY, and line 4 DENVER. I cannot find a model name painted on the rod like I have seen in other pictures of Granger rods.
Can the manufacture date be narrowed down? Is it very valuable or should I just go fishing with it?
Thanks for the work you are doing as an expert.

AnswerDonald,
I assume your rod is not round but has fat sides, being bamboo.
The reason a bamboo rod doesn't have a label is usually that an attempt to refurbish has removed it or it has worn off. I would expect a model number on the bamboo itself.
For that reason I use thread color only as a confirmation.
I can date your rod using
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair. You might find it at your local library as a resource only book.
He says there are 3 eras of rods with different components and characteristics. He says the patent was roll stamped on the reel seat from 1934-1938. Keep in mind production slowed to a trickle during WWII and he sold out to Wright & McGill in 1946.
Resale value:
This depends allot on length and condition. Nine foot bamboo rods sell for less than shorter ones.
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide by Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000)
add about 30% for age of book.
Homel estimate:
Condition Value
poor 65 to 75
good 145 to 170
excellent 275 to 325

Mac
