QuestionI have a 1930s wright mcgill split bamboo fly rod from my father which he purchased from montgomery wards in medford, Or when he was 10 or 12 years old(he is now 91). it is in the original tube, has both tips and is in nearly new condition. the badging and cork are pristine and finish is still shiny and unchecked. all wrapping and hardware are original. it is an 8' rod and i'm wondering what the range of vallue would be for such an item. thanks
AnswerMike,
First let me assume that your rods has flat sides, reel seat below handle. If yes then we agree it is a bamboo fly rod. I am surprised when folks show me their brown graphite or fiberglass rods and tell me it is bamboo. If not then all bets are off.
Wright McGill purchased Granger Rods in 1946, they did not make rods before then, they had sold fishing tackle since the twenties.
So I have some big doubts that it is 1930s Wright & McGill bamboo fly rod.
You can verify this by the very reliable researcher who wrote
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook , Michael Sinclair . Might be available in your major library systems.
Tubes and socks are not always reliable in identifying your rod.
What labels or logos are in the rod itself?
Tell me what words are written on the rod and do they go toward or away from the handle?
What is "badging "?
I should also tell you that almost all questioners on this AlExperts web page say their rod is excellent and pristine. Only a very small few are right.
To value this I need to better pin down model and date.
I also have some trouble with Montgomery Wards ,they usually sold W & McG rods with a different label such as Old Faithful or Whitney. But it's a lot more possible than your 1930s date.
