Answer
Well hello there Amanda, I'm sorry this has taken so long...I did not receive the original e-mail from the AllExperts website until they informed me that I had an unanswered question waiting for me.
So you're ready to go fishing and need that line on your reel. Okey doke, I'll do my best not to complicate things.
The "open faced" reel you mentioned? The term is most often used to refer to "spinning" reels. These reels have a bail that rotates around a bobbin or spool, wrapping the line around it as the spool occilates up and down.
To put line on this type of reel, take the filler spool you purchased from your local tackle dealer and fine the end of the line. Be sure to place your reel on the rod to make things a bit easier. Now, run the line from the filler spool, through the guides of the rod, tip to reel. Now open the bail of the reel allowing it to lock open. Now tie the end of the line to the reel's spool. Make sure it's tight and doesn't slide around the spool easily as you move it. Be sure to trim the "tag" end of the line hanging off the knot.
Now you are ready to spool your reel up. Here's where it may get just a little tricky. If the line comes off the filler spool in the wrong direction, your fresh, new line will get twisted as it is reeled on. Set your filler spool on the ground in front of you with one of the flat ends of the spool down. You may need to have someone help hold it there or let the edges of your shoes do the work. If it is in fact a spinning reel you have and we're still on the right track, DO NOT have someone put a pencil through the spool and allow it to "spin" off the filler while you crank the reel...this will guarantee twisted new line.
Now, hold the rod and reel comfortably, pinch the line above the reel with your thumb and forefinger while also holding the rod's foregrip with that hand. With your other hand, begin to turn the reel handle forward and slowly wind the line onto the reel with good tension (caused by your pinching the line)the reels bail should have flipped over and caught the line and begun winding onto the reel. Now, watch the line between the filler spool and the tip of the rod. If the wavey loops that form from the natural memory of the line tighten and become smaller and smaller, your line is twisting. Just flip your filler spool over and it should loosen the coils and stay constant. Keep filling the reel until the line is about 1/8 of an inch from the edge of the spool. Then, just clip the line near the filler and voila, your reel is ready to fish and the line is already throught the guides.
If you have a conventional, or baitcasting reel, just run
the line through the guides, then the levelwind guide. Tie onto the spool, trim the tag end and crank until full...you can have someone use a pencil to help with this type of reel fill...Just have them put the pencil through the filler spools' hole and have then put just a bit of pressure on the sides as it spins, for a good tight fill. Also, make sure the line comes off the top of the filler spool as it spins and onto the top of the reel spool. Again fill it to about 1/16 or 1/8 of an inch from the edge of the spool. Now you're ready to go fishing!
Hope that was of some help! Let me know if you get confused, we'll try another approach.
Good luck when you get out on the water and have fun!
