Freshwater / light tackle fishing on Maui
Question
Randy,
Are there any/many freshwater fishing opportunities on Maui. I am traveling to Maui and I wouldn't mind finding myself some relaxing stream or lake to fish. Fishing on the open sea might be turbulent for my wife, who will be 4.5 mos. pregnant. I have plenty of light spinning tackle and a 4-5 wt. fly rod.
Any advice is appreciated.

Answer
Aloha Jeff,
Unfortunately there are no lakes or streams that have fish in them on Maui. However, here are a couple options. Surfcasting along the beach, out around the rocky points can be fun. Not big catches, I would recommend some type of lure, such as a Mr. Champion, or Mirrorlure. The area between Maui, Lanai is reletively calm. I would think there would be no problem out there for your wife. Thats where the action is, offshore. The Hawaiian Islands has no contintental shelf, so it drops off really quickly. Because of that shore fishing is limited as there is no baitfish around, hence no fishj to feed on them, unlike the Gulf of Mexico say or most places on the US coastline. There are freshwater places on Oahu and Kauai. Good luck.
