Matching Reels to Rods

Question
How do you determine the proper range of compatible reels to rods? I want to buy or have some rods built for inshore and medium offshore fishing. Speckled Trout, Redfish, Grouper, Amberjack, Spanish, King, etc. Spinning reels only. 6.5 to 7 ft rods of any recommended strength. Any info would be appreciated

Answer
You say "rods" so I guess you mean at least two, although three might be better.  As a general rule, a reel that holds 200 yds. of mono would work for most any fish, even though for a very large one such as an outsize amberjack or kingfish, more line or chasing the fish in the boat might be in order.  For the grouper, if they are large and since they are on the bottom, a rod about 6 feet and reel that will hold 200 yds. of 30 lb.test line is a minimum.  Since you will probably drop a large bait to the bottom, no trolling is involved and the rod needs to have good lifting power.  (For all these rods, the reel really accomodates the rod--not the reverse.)  For amberjack and kingfish you probably will be trolling (though not necessarily so) and a light 6-7 foot rod would work--200 yds. of 20 lb. line would be my choice.  For trout and redfish I would have at least a 7 foot very light rod (I use an 8 1/2 footer--yes, spinning) with the same amount of 10-12 lb. mono.  Bear in mind that what you have asked is like asking someone which automobile he would buy; you get as many answers as people you ask.  Good luck.
