russ j peak spinning rod
Question
I have a RARE Russell Peak 3 piece spinning rod in mint shape and was wondering what it is worth, and if you may be interested in buying it.Or anyone that may want it. THANKS ROB TURKO
Answer
Rob,
First problem is, is this rod made from bamboo , fiberglass or graphite?
Rare in this case does not mean more valuable. It is not in my memory or books, most collectors are not going to know this maker and their interest commands the resale values.
I did an Internet search ,which isn't all that reliable, more rumor than fact. I did see a reference to Russ Peak having said that he dabbled in bamboo in the early years but did not consider it his medium. I assume from that he may have made a few bamboo rods. I also saw some indications of his name appearing on bamboo rods he did repair or refinish work on. In general, he was known for his glass and graphite rods and not known as a bamboo rod builder.
Speculation could be that this is a Russ Peak made rod, a Russ Peak autographed rod, a Russ Peak endorsed rod or even a rod made for Russ Peak. There do seem to be Russ Peak signed bamboo rods that appear from time to time, but not a lot of them.
As to value, I really wouldn't have any idea until the original maker is determined.
You might try contacting Kerry Burkheimer at the web site below. He studied under and collaborated with Russ Peak. He might be able to shed more light on the topic.

Third strike is that spinning rods just aren't collected like fly rods. I have tried to sell bamboo spin rods and usually don't sell for more than $25.
Luck,
Mac
