The Roe Knot
Question
Hi, I have a devil of a time tying the egg loop bumper knot as they call it here. Im from California and fish the Sacramento river for salmon and stealhead. The knot Im talking of looks similer to a snelled hook but the line to the rod comes out of the middle of the knot and threw the eye of the hook forming a loop in which you slip your roe through. What Iam wondering is are there several variations of this knot and where would I find them, is there a special tool for tying this knot, or maybe you have a technique that is easyer to do. Any help simplifying this knot would save me hours of time.
Answer
Hi Jim,
I have a fairly quick method for tying the egg loop. I just can't think of a way to explain it through writing. I don't know of a tool for this knot. I wish I could show you in person.
I start with putting the line down through the eye. I am right handed. First I hold the hook at the bend with my left hand and take the line with my right hand above the eye and wrap it around the shank below the eye 7-10 times. and now for the tricky part. Then I take the end of line that I just wrapped around the shank and put it back through the eye. Then I turn the hook around so the eye is in my left hand now. Then, keeping that loop big enough to get your hand through, I use my right hand and start wrapping around the shank where I left off before only this time wrapping over the tag end as well as the main line. I wrap it about 5-7 times before taking the main line above the eye while keeping tension on the loop and slowly cinching everything down. Then, when it is snugg, I take the tag end in my mouth and gently tighten the knot by pulling between my teeth and my left hand.
I hope this make some sense. It is hard without pictures. Let me know if I can clarify. Good luck.
