trolling for trout.
Question
Hoe do you troll with nightcrawlers, what kind or rig is used? for browns and rainbows.
Answer
Hi Gene,
Sorry I have taken so long to get back to you. I have been busy fishing for fall salmon here on the Oregon coast. On Tuesday, we caught a 24 lb. 26lb. and a 30+lb. salmon! And 4 crab! It was exciting. We were trolling herring.
Most of my trout trolling has been for rainbows. There might be some local differences in how to troll for browns. The way I troll for trout is: I use a "gang troll" such as Ford Fender. I tie the gang troll onto my main line, then below that I put a rubber snubber. Then I put a 14" (approx.) piece of 3-5 lb test leader on and then I use a small lure such as a Dick Nite or an FST and put a small chunk of worm on the hook. I don't use any weight on the line. You may have to play with the amount of line you let out until you get in the strike zone. The gang troll will help you to know the right speed. You want your rod tip to rythmically thrust up and down at nice slow, even pace. As I mentioned above, each lake has it's own local techniques that may differ slightly from this but this should get you started. If you need any more info, let me know and I can clarify.
good luck,
