What Gear to Buy

Question
Boris (one of the reasons I chose you was your name - my name is Doris).  I know NOTHING about fishing, but my son lives in Stuart Florida (survived both Frances and Jeanne) and I think he would enjoy fishing from the shore at Hobe Sound Beach. We have visted him there and I noticed several fisherman on the beach.  I want to buy him a set-up so he can go there and fish.  What do I want to buy? I suppose I buy a rod and a reel?  What about tackle and lures or hooks?  What kind of fishing is this called when you fish from the beach; on-shore?  Do you need a license to fish like this?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks, Doris

Answer
Doris:
Surf fishing, it is called, and no license is needed here in FL.  If fishing from a beach is the only kind your son will do, then a surf rod 8-11 feet long that takes a spinning reel is the best route to take.  A 2-piece either fiberglass or graphite is what most people use.  The spinning reel should be balanced to the rod and hold about 200 yds. of monofilament line 20 or 30 lb. test.  He will need swivels, heavier mono for leaders, hooks, sinkers, and a variety of casting lures if he wants to fish without bait. These things should probably be bought by your son as they can vary tremendously depending on the fish sought. In Stuart one can buy all of this at local tackle stores where expert local advice is available.  Or you can send for the equipment from Bass Pro Shops, Cabelas, or many other mail order places you can find on the net.  Your son might prefer to fish from the surf and to fish in the waterways around Stuart in which case a 6-7 foot spinning rod would work.  And a copy of my book will help him a lot, too.  Good luck to your son!  Boris Arnov
