QuestionI have a penn 850ss spinning reel that need some painting. what is the best way to repaint it?
AnswerHello Eduardo!
Great question...thanks for asking.
The best thing to have done with the housing of the reel is to take it to a coatings facility and pay to have the parts powder-coated. The body was done that way to begin with. The spools on the SS series are hard anodized...this can also be done by a plater...just check with a plater near you and ask for Mil-spec hard anodization. As long as the parts are well prep'd, you will have a reel that looks brand-new. My guess is that if you talk a good talk, many coaters/ platers will give you a great deal by just putting your parts in with another, larger job that is being done.
If you elect to paint the parts,( I dont recommend painting the anodized surfaces like the spool and handle), go to a respected auto-paint dealer near you and ask about the best primer and paint for the diecast aluminum...if you prep the body VERY well and have a VERY HARD primer that will support epoxy paints...try Dupont Imron...the stuff is VERY hard after it seasons for a few weeks. ( you can speed that up by baking the parts at 110 or 120 degrees F. in an oven for 12 or 14 hours) Just remember to keep the screw holes clear and any surfaces that mate, very thin on the paint and the primer so the reel will reassemble within decent tolerances.
Just remember a few things of HIGH IMPORTANCE...use the paints and primers in an open environment and use a NIOSH approved respirator to keep your lungs healthy. Always refer to the manufacturers instructions and warnings reguarding the use of the products...the IMRON and compatible primers are chemically very "Hot" and WILL MESS UP YOUR LUNGS! as well as having the potential to be absorbed through your skin before they are cured.
Eduardo, I hope that is of some help to you! Have fun with the project and be careful if you use hot coatings...
Thanks for the question...
