Answer
Dear David,
Thanks for using All Experts. I hope I can answer your questions with information that will help you be more successful.
If you hit a log on shore before going into the water it will be hung up quicker on that log,
rather than bumping one under the water. It also depends on the type of jig you are using.
However, all of the jigs I use, which is mainly for flipping/pitching, are with weed guards.
As for your weed conditions, I'm not sure if these are submerged weeds, or ones that
grow all the way to the surface. If they are submerged weed beds, I would fish them with
several different types of lures.
First would be a crankbait, which would dive to a depth just above, or ticking the tops of
the weeds. Also, parallel the outside edges of the weed beds. Crankbaits will pull out the
most active fish.
Swimming a curl tail grub, over and through the weeds would be the second choice.
Thirdly, I would fish a Texas or Carolina rigged plastic worm or grub. If it was the
Carolina rig, it would be set to a leader length that would all the lure to be at, or near the
tops of the weeds. Texas rigged worms would be fished throughout the weed beds.
Last, but not least, I would fish a 4-inch finesse worm on a small lead head jig. This
would be pumped and wiggled around the weed beds, and especially on the outside edges.
If the weeds are on the surface, then use something like a Rat, or other weedless topwater
type spoon. Watch for any open pockets in these weeds, as these are great ambush points
for bass.
Hope this has helped answer your question.
Best of fishing,
Dan
