Answer
Hey ya Greg! Thanks for the question...
The 320 is an awesome little reel!
The only problem you are most likely having is that the yoke that lifts the pinion gear off of the spool is either totally gunked up and not under the pinion gear where it is supposed to be, corroded to the spools shaft, or the the spring that is linked to the free-spool lever and the pinion gear yoke, is broken or has slipped out. (That is the problem if your freespool lever was loose and you tightened the bolt.)
Either way, all you have to do is slowly remove the right side plate and check what I have mentioned...then clean and reassemble the reel or take it to a reputable reel repair shop and have it done. I think most anglers owe it to themselves to learn how to take down, clean and reassemble every reel they own. The GTI should have come with an exploded view of the reel and the parts list, a tube of Penn Lube and a wrench. As long as you have no corrosion, you should be able to take the entire reel down with that one tool.
You should do this annually anyway and now is a great time before the season really gets started. Remember to change the drag washers (the fiber washers) annually and the metals if they become corroded and/or pitted.
Use Penn blue grease for the gears and either the Penn lube or a teflon lube like TriFlow for the bearings to keep that spool spinning like a Tazmanian Devil!
You have a great reel! If you have any problems with disassembly or reassembly, contact me again and I will guide you through it if possible or find you a shop to do the work for a good price.
Thanks again for the question-
