type of baitcasting rod and reel
Question
I want to get into baitcasting more and I need advice on rod and reel selection.
someone told me to use a 6.2:1 gear ratio for quick retrieves like buzzbaits and crankbaits and a 3.8:1 for slow retrieves like plastic worms and jig n pig and stuff like that. Is this true?
Also, i know to use a medium action rod for bass fishing like this, but what is a good length rod to get for the two setups. I'm a huge fan of St. Croix Avid rods and I was thinking two 6 footers would suffice. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you in advance for your help.
Answer
Matthew,
I personally would not go as low as a 3.8:1 for anything other than bluegill. 6:1 and up is great for crankbaits and buzzbaits. Match this with a medium action crankin' rod at about 6 1/2 feet. As far as soft plastics go - A 5:1 is a good all around way to go. You can always slow your retrieve; however, with too low of a retrieve rate, you will not have the speed if you need it with lures such as speed worms. Matching a rod really depends on the weight of the lure. However, any medium action from 6-7 foot would work. With light lures a meduim-light may be best. With heavier jigs and large 10 - 12 inch worms, a medium-heavy may be best.
I hope this helps. If not please feel free to ask again.
Sincerely,
Chris "Evin" Carter
