rigging
Question
I am trying to find what I used for many years to attach hooks to a fishing line. It was called a "jiffy rig".
It was made of stiff wire with a preformed loop for attaching hooks, etc., and had a coil for twisting the line onto it above and below this preformed loop so that you could place it anywhere on your line.
Any idea of who made it or where I can obtain these ?
Answer
Hi Charles:
Why? Why are you looking for the jiffy rig? I know exactly what you are describing and used to use them long ago, as did many others. However, times have changed and there is a good reason why you are not finding them. They have no real value today. Part of the reason is that all that extra hardware just got in the way, caught lots of seaweed, required heavier sinkers, and made for storage problems. In an era of linen lines and catgut leaders, those gadgets did serve a purpose. Today, because of all the synthetics available for terminal rigs, there is no need for the jiffy rigs. A properly tied dropper loop in a typical lenght of mono or flourocarbon line or leader will serve the same purpose and be much more "stealthy" making for a better and easier presentation. The properties of modern lines and leaders really make most of that hardware unnecessary.
My suggestion is to forget the old technology of the past which the jiffy rig is a part of. Get familiar with some of the knots specifically designed to be used with mono or flourocarbon lines and enjoy the benefits of fishing with less hardware. You will catch more fish without the jiffy rigs and probably have more fun since you will need less sinker weights and spend less time cleaning the rig of weed.
