quick beginner tips
Question
Chris,
I am a decent trout fly fisherman but will be fishing (first time) for LM Bass in a pond in PA. Can you give me some quick bait and technique tips.
Thanks,
Brad
Answer
Hey Brad, thanks for asking. The end of summer into the beginning of autumn is typically one of the best times of the year to get out largemouth fishing, so you've definately picked a good time to start.
The first thing to be concerned with (much like in trout fishing) is locating groups of active fish. As the water temperatures start to decrease, you'll find largemouth in heavy concentration aong creek channels, bends, and other areas that allow quick access to deeper water from shallow flats and cover. Since the fish should be active, I would suggest using lures like spinnerbaits and crankbaits to locate them because they can be fished extremely quickly, thus allowing you to cover a great deal of water fast. From there, I would keep at least a handful of other lures around like carolina and/or texas rigged plastic worms, pig'n'jig, and a variety of topwaters for early morning and late afternoon/evening fishing.
This is a pretty basic strategy for effective largemouth fishing this time of the year. This is just that though, simple and basic, so if you'd like, I can go into greater detail and provide more options and ideas for you. If there's anything else you'd like to know that I can help you with, be sure to ask and I'll do my best. I hope I've been of some help.
Good luck and thanks for asking,
Chris
