Restoring a graphite rod
Question
Hi Rich.
I recently got an old graphite rod that I want to restore. I plan on replacing the reel seat, grip, and guides.
My question is what needs to be done to the blank after I've removed these components and reinstalled the new seat and grip. Basically, does the blank need to be stripped of it's old finish? Is it a good idea to do so even if it's not necessary?
Any other advice or tips you may want to give are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Justin

You can clean the graphite with alcohol but be very careful when removing glue or other finishes on graphite - do not sand with a machine or rotary device. Use a knife or razor. The dust from graphite is dangerous to inhale. I don't believe you can remove the finish without removing graphite there by ruining a restore. You can remove the finish from the guides and the glue from the reel seat with slow study heat and a sharp edge.
