bamboo restoration
Question
I aquired a Heddon #10 bamboo rod which I would like to refinish.
What is the best technique to remove the old varnish without
damaging the bamboo or glue used to hold the strips together?
Thanks for your help
Answer
John,
Good Question- Don't use a water based stripper- make sure it is oil based. I have used the following brand names with success: Old Dads , Citristrip and BTX Stripper. You can get them at any hardware store. Stripper can't damage bamboo , however they can damage hide glue but Mr. Heddon didn't use hide glue on any 10s. This doesn't mean that the glue is solid and that the rod may not need to be reglued.
Good luck
enjoy that great rod, I have retored several 10s and enjoyed testing them.
