Structure
Question
Hey Dan, my question is about secondary points. I know buy reading that secondary points are usually transition points for Largemouth Bass coming from deep water going to shallow, or coming from shallow water going to deep. I hear many refrences to secondary points, but I am unclear as to exacally WHAT they are? Can you help please? Thanks in advance.
Answer
Hi Adam,
I want to thank you for coming to Allexperts.com. Hopefully I'll be able to shed some light on your question.
Secondary points, as I have understood and fished them, have been in the Bull Shoals Lake creek arms. The major point is the one, which separates the creeks. Secondary points are those encountered as you move back into the creeks. There can be several, and when pattern fishing it is best to target similar spots to the ones that you have found productive. For example, if there are shallow gravel points that run into a certain depth of water, and some with chunk rock, first go after the ones that have shown the great success for that day or week.
All patterns can change from hour to hour, day to day or week to week. However, with points there tend to be some that will be somewhat productive most of the time. That isn't meaning that the fish will hold in the same spot on the point, unless there is a very unusual fish holding structure, such as an old car, large isolated brush pile, or anything similar. Otherwise, fish can be found on the ends, sides and top. Weeds also play a big part in some lakes. In fact, there can be weed points, where there is actually no bottom structure point ?but, that is another subject ?can even be an article.
One of the things you want to observe on a point is the wind direction. The wind forms a current, such as river current flowing over wing dams. In this case, many times the fish will be on the down wind side, especially with shallow points, waiting for food to be washed over to them. Crankbaits and tubes, fished with the current, and coming to the fish will be a good starting technique.
I hope I've answered your question. If you need any further information on this, or other fishing questions please feel free to ask. Sometimes it will take me a little longer to answer, but I try to get to the questions as soon as possible.
Best of fishing,
Dan
