what test line
Question
Hi Boris,
thanks for offering your help. I have a Penn 965 real and a medium heavy action baitcasting rod that I would like to use for saltwater fishing. I was wondering if you could reccomend a weight of line to use for game fish varying from bluefish to striper to kingfish. Is there a weight I could use for a variety of species or do I need to be more species specific. Also I have heard that braided line is the wave of the future, what do you think of it? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi JDH,
There's a pretty good range from blues to kings, but if I were rigging for them all I would choose no less than 20# and certainly not more than 30--I would stay on the smaller side. Actually, I use 20 or less on most of my fishing for the fish you are after, but the problem may be your rod. When you say medium heavy, that could mean 20 would be a little light. I would have to cast the rod to really know as what one manufacturer says may not be what I think it is. Anyway, I would use monofilament, not braided. Mono is forgiving in that there is stretch that may save you from jerking off a fish. Also it lays on the reel spool better and doesn't dig in as does braided. And mono is less visible to the fish even though you will have a leader on the end of it. Good luck. Boris
